Guru Poornima – Celebration for Guru.18, Aug, 2017, by Seema Bhatnagar
Guru Poornima is a full moon day or Poornima of Ashada month (June – July) of Hindu Lunar calendar. It is an occasion for a disciple to express gratitude towards spiritual teacher or guide. This year it was celebrated on Sun, 9th July, 2017.
It is a very important occasion for somebody who is on a spiritual path. The value and meaning of this occasion is precious only for a disciple who understands the presence of Guru in life. This is a day when a disciple receives grace from Guru in bounty.
In modern times, the word “Guru” is heavily corrupted and difficult to digest so it is doubly difficult to appreciate the importance of this day for a common individual. To make it simpler and digestible, one can consider this as a “Thanks giving day”.
For the first time, I visited Isha Yoga ashram, Coimbatore to celebrate Guru Poornima. This was my second trip in a year after Mahashivaratri celebrations in February 2017.
Staying at ashram for a week gave me an opportunity to remain in silence. I stayed for almost 5 days without uttering a single word and was only in listening mode. Remaining silent conserves lot of energy which keeps you more alert and active throughout the day and you need very less sleep.
With this silence, the whole experience of celebrating Guru Poornima was something I would cherish for the rest of my life. Those tender moments of love and compassion in the presence of Sadhguru are indescribable. Those moments have become an indelible memory which I cherish every day.
Magical and Mystical moments.
On the night of 8th July, Sadhguru invited all visitors to gather near Adiyogi statue for midnight meditation under the full moonlight. Adiyogi, a 112 feet tall statue in the vicinity of ashram, is a face of Lord Shiva in full vibrancy.
Adding zest to this occasion, moon made sure to be there in its full glory, a cool gentle breeze blowing, with patches of clouds floating and dancing in the sky. It got started with Lord Shiva invocation followed by instructions for meditation by Sadhguru. Setting a perfect stage for meditation under an open sky, lights were switched off. The whole ambiance was reverberating with energy and grace of Sadhguru. Once meditation got over, everybody including Sadhguru, started gyrating on Shiva chants (Bilvashtakam) sung by Sounds of Isha, live music of drums, violin, guitar and flute. It was almost for two hours we celebrated Guru Poornima in the presence of Sadhguru, a rare opportunity for any disciple.
Those two hours when everyone was soaked in the energy and exuberance of Sadhguru, completely oblivion of the world, were absolutely mystical and magical. Those tender, loving and golden moments have become lifetime memories for each one who was present over there.
Myself, as an insignificant being, absolutely good at nothing, out of sheer devotion just attempted to pen down few words to express my gratitude towards Sadhguru, as my offering on Guru Poornima. Words would always remain words and do not possess power to express the real depth of feelings, but still attempted to convey something from the surface of the ocean of feelings.
Journey to unknown.
You met me when I didn’t know you.
You hold my hand when I didn’t know you.
Your lap became my abode when I heard of you.
You became my breath when I wanted to know you.
Basking in the lap of compassion and love.
Never ever felt a tinge of pain.
Not bothered about what is the destination.
May this journey to unknown continue eternally in your lap.
- Your pampered child.
I feel glad and find myself fortunate enough to have a presence of Guru in my life. Not just on this occasion but I offer him my heartiest gratitude every moment for touching my life in million different ways for which I don’t have enough adequate and appropriate words to express. I wish and pray to bask in this venerable relationship eternally.
Rally for Rivers
On the same occasion, Sadhguru launched a campaign, Rally for Rivers. With a fervent concern for depleting state of rivers in Bharat (India), he wants to create awareness among people and Govt of India about taking some measures for saving these dying rivers. To give it a required impetus and making it a national movement, he will be driving himself across Bharat from Kanyakumari to Himalayas, two ends, from South to North, touching 16 states. In each state there will be special programs to create required awareness.
